Thirteen of the thirty public-land states are under the jurisdiction of the Eastern States' Office of the Bureau of Land Management. Referred to as the “Eastern land states,” these states lie east of or border the Mississippi River and include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The other seventeen public-land states are referred to as the “Western states.”

Land Entry Case Files

Before the homesteaders, soldiers, and other individuals received their patents, much paperwork had to be completed. Those purchasing land from the government were given receipts for payments, while those who obtained land through military bounty land warrants, pre-emption entries, or home-steading filed applications and provided proof of their claim and right to the land. These application files and other paperwork have been compiled into records known as land entry case files, which are generally the most genealogically valuable of the federal land records. Land entry case files are in the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration.

Tract Books

When a settler filed a land claim with the federal government, the entry was recorded in a tract book. Grouped by state, land office, and legal land description, tract books at a minimum include the name of the applicant and a brief description of the land. Tract books for the Eastern public land states are in the custody of the Bureau of Land Management. For the Western states they are held by the National Archives.
